Tucson to Hermosillo, Mexico: Day Numero Uno

So, last week we were in Mexico on a 10 day driving tour of our lovely country to the south. We left Thursday night after Ammon got home from work. Our goal was to drive to Hermosillo, a city that appeared to be about 4-5 hours away. "Appeared" because, try as we may, we couldn't get a clear mapquest or any driving directions from here to there so we had to kinda guesstimate using that fun little distance measure on your map. Well, we figured as best we could but we didn't account for the much poorer roads, the border crossing, the torrential downpour and the many toll plazas. So, we arrived 8 hours later, at 2am. Yeah, we were beat.

But, we slept well. Next morning we enjoyed showers before our next horrendously long day of driving. See Ammon and Connor enjoying the glass wall in the shower. Silly boys!

Note: For those of you interested in the process of getting into Mexico, let me tell you. You need Mexican insurance (about $100; you should buy before you go and do it yourself online instead of through your auto insurance-- I got a quote with our insurance company first and then did the same quote myself online and saved $40). The other stuff you do just past the border: get a vehicle permit (about $30; good for up to 6 months) and permits for each of traveler (you need your passports or birth certificates; cost was about $20 each). Then you just drive through the country. There are many tolls along the way ranging from just under $2 to up to $7 on the regular roads. As you get deeper into Mexico (like near the windy jungle areas) there is a choice between the free "libre" road and the paid "cuota" road. The difference for us (we took all free roads going down and mostly paid roads home) was about 8 hours and cost us about $70 --totally worth it in time and headaches.
